Can you find the Magic Number?

Choose any single digit number.

Double it.        

Add 12.

Subtract 3 from the answer.

Add 5 to the answer.

Divide this answer by 2.

Take away your original number.  What answer did you get?

Check to see if you have found the magic number by working through the same instructions with different starting numbers, e.g., choose from single digit, two digit and 3 digit numbers.

The Magic Seed:   

Shannon was given a tiny box with one seed in it.  There was a note under it which read:

'If you plant me, I will grow faster than any plant you have ever seen before.  Treat me like any other plant but make sure you put me in a room that is not too hot or too cold.  I also need some sunlight.'

Shannon was very curious and she got some soil and a pot ready for growing the seed.  Once she had sewn the seed, she watered it and decided that the hallway would be ideal. 

The next morning, Monday, a tiny little shoot could just be seen above the soil.  On Tuesday, the shoot had doubled in size.  Before breakfast each morning, Shannon kept an eye on how much the plant had grown and realised that it kept doubling in size.

One Sunday morning, Shannon could not get into the hallway because the magic plant had filled the room!  Work out when the magic plant half filled this room?

Spotty Dog Problem: Two dogs are playing in the park.  Altogether they have 96 spots.  Can you work out how many spots each dog has if I tell you that one of them has 20 more spots than the other one?
